A University of Texas at Austin mathematician and administrator serving in leadership for 23 years, Armendariz chaired the Department of Mathematics, helping to lead the program into the top tier of rankings and making it one of the nation’s best public university mathematics departments. The recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Mathematics Association of America, Armendariz established new initiatives at UT to help underrepresented students thrive in mathematics. A specialist in noncommutative rings theory, his work on a particular type, reduced ring, led to their being renamed Armendariz rings.
