Vivienne Malone-Mayes, ’66

Malone-Mayes, the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin and the fifth to do so nationwide, studied functional analysis and served on the faculty of Baylor University. Elected Director-at-large for Texas’ section of the Mathematical Association of America, she also received recognition from Baylor students for her teaching and service: within just a few years of arriving on campus, students honored her as Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year.
