Leloir conducted research into sugar nucleotides and was the first to isolate these as a new class of substances. He also unlocked information about how carbohydrates get converted into energy, a finding important for understanding some metabolic disorders. Leloir was the founder of the Institute for Biochemical Research and winner of the 1970 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
